Fox News Ratings Hit 12-Year Demo Lows In January Cable News Figures

Roger Ailes and his Hate Machine, A/K/A Fox News, appear to be falling off their perch atop the ratings ladder. The Talking Heads of the media (see link below) want to ascribe it to all of the favorable media the President received during this campaign year. The only problem with that theory is that it is based upon a false premise. I am no Obama apologist, as anyone who has read this blog for any length of time can attest to, but the President was subjected to more poor reporting and negative reporting due to lazy reporters using GOP, and in some cases Fox  News, talking points that made false equivalents the premise of a question that was best described as the equivalent of the, “When did you stop beating your wife?” If you say, “I haven’t.”, then you are convicted in the public’s mind of being a wife-beater. If you say, “Last week.”, you are still convicted as a wife-beater. It is the old “Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.” conundrum.

So now that we have established that the lazy reporters, who are deadly afraid of being labeled partial or biased, mostly because they haven’t done their homework and don’t really know the facts of the matter, have once again used the false equivalency of the benefit of the “Democratic Convention, the Election Results night, and the inauguration.” as the basis for the cracks in the Rupert Murdoch noise machine.  As if there were no Repugnantcan National Convention; as if the Old Farts that make up the Fox News viewership weren’t interested in the election results and; as if those same Old Farts didn’t want to hang on Sean Hannity’s and Bill O’Reilly’s every word for the latest outraged conspiracy theory why Romney got his ass handed to him. Sorry, guys and gals, but that dog won’t hunt, either.

Furthermore, another of the excuses du jour given for the “inexplicable” fall in the mighty News Corps International’s Fox News Machine’s decline by an overwrought media talking heads cadre is that the Fox News faithful wouldn’t watch the Obama inauguration. Uh, maybe. Except the Obama inauguration occurred in January, after the tabulation of the totals of the numbers constituting the order of the rankings. Sorry, Charlie, Starkist wants tuna that tastes good. Go try another idiotic, ill thought out explanation.

No, the grim news creeping up on Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch is that Old Man Time and The Grim Reaper are taking out their viewership at an increasingly frenetic rate. In the 30-54 age group, fox got totally hammered by MSNBC followed by CNN and then Fox. Fox has always counted on the 54+ age group to keep it on top. But with the die-off of the die-hard reactionaries combined with the diluting effect of the increasing transition of the Baby Boomers into the 54+ age group, the Roger and Rupert Lunacy Show is being stomped. It will be in the near future that Fox News is reduced to selling “Gold Bug” ads to try and keep its dying empire propped up.

Fox News Looks Vulnerable

Fox News Looks Vulnerable

At the end of each month, cable news ratings are released to the public. And, like clockwork, Fox News dominates the top 13 or so programs, far outstripping its competitors.

January was … a little different. To be sure, everything is relative in cable news: Fox News still had nine out of the top 10 programs. It has spent 11 consecutive years as the top-rated cable news channel. Its 6 a.m. show drew almost double the ratings of CNN’s top-ranking prime time show.

But, as rival MSNBC was quick to point out, and BuzzFeed was quick to trumpet, Fox News had its worst prime time ratings in the coveted 25-54 demographic since August 2001, and its lowest total day ratings since June 2008.

To a seasoned watcher of cable news ratings, there were other surprises. Rachel Maddow, for instance, came in 10th, beating “Studio B” and the 11 p.m. repeat of “The O’Reilly Factor.” In January 2012, she came in 14th. It may not seem like much, but the top of the cable news field has been extremely stable — and if Maddow were to continue creeping up the list, it would mean a real sea change. Overall, MSNBC — perhaps powered by liberal euphoria over President Barack Obama’s inauguration — was the only cable news channel to grow its ratings from 2012.

This continues a pattern that emerged in 2012: Fox News viewers tuned out en masse from Democratic-themed events, causing the network’s ratings to plunge during the Democratic National Convention, the hours immediately following Obama’s re-election, and the president’s inauguration. MSNBC, meanwhile, benefited from the solidification of its Democratic-friendly lineup, and drew a lion’s share of eager liberal viewers.

Over on CNN, “The Situation Room” led the pack, followed by “Piers Morgan Tonight” and Anderson Cooper‘s show.
